Age of Jermuk City
As a living and recreational area, Jermuk is one of the biggest and most ancient cities in Vayots Dzor highlands.
Jermuk is mentioned in medieval manuscripts (historian Stepanos Orbelyan, 13th century), although the ruins of ancient fortresses, architecture buildings and monuments on its territory prove the settlement was founded much earlier!
According to certain historical sources, Jermuk was established in 189 B.C. by the Artaxiad Armenian Dynasty.

The Legend about Jermuk Healing Water
There is even a legend about the healing qualities of the mineral water of Jermuk Armenia!
According to it, in ancient times, a hunter shot an arrow and injured a deer in one of the Jermuk forests. This deer kept on running, eventually coming to the place of the healing mineral water and jumping into it.
After that, the deer jumped out of the water and it was absolutely and astonishingly cured! Since that time, the glory of Jermuk mineral healthy waters quickly spread around the world.
Presently, in almost every Armenian store, you can find bottles of “Jermuk” mineral water with this deer pictured on them, which has become the main symbol of the city.

Jermuk Armenia Attraction #1: Jermuk Waterfall
The waterfall of Jermuk Armenia falls from 70 meters height. Indeed, this is a unique miracle of Armenian highlands. It is named “Mermaid’s hair”, due to its special resemblance to female hair, flowing freely right into the Arpa river gorge!
The waterfall also has its own legend, popular among local people, which they tell foreigners as well. The legend says once upon a time there was a very beautiful princess and many princes wanted to marry her. But she was in love with the son of a shepherd, and they had to meet secretly.
The princess threw a rope into the mentioned gorge so that her beloved one could climb up to her. Soon, the king learned about it and cursed his daughter. He said that if they ever meet again, princess would turn into a mermaid and stay in the water forever!
As expected, young lovers couldn’t go long without each other. The princess didn’t have a rope at hand, instead she threw her pretty long hair into the gorge, and suddenly the curse came true. Her hair turned into the presently famous waterfall, that’s why it is called “Mermaid’s hair”.
Jermuk Armenia Attraction #2: Gallery of Waters
If you decide to visit Jermuk Armenia, even if you don’t have any problems with your health, this place is a must see.
Jermuk’s Gallery of waters represents several pipes, coming out from the walls. Natural and healthy mineral water flows from them right into stone urns designed for that purpose.
What is special about the Water Gallery is that the temperature of water, flowing from each pipe is noted on the corresponding wall, so that people know what they are going to try beforehand.
Mineral waters are different here: each of them has different qualities and healing properties, that’s why they are believed to be the cure to any disease! For example, there are waters that are said to heal cancer, as well as certain liver problems.
Jermuk Armenia Attraction #3: Gndevank Monastery
Gndevank Monastery is among the most attractive destinations nearby the city of Jermuk. It is situated on the left bank of the Arpa river, about 10 kilometers west of Jermuk city.
