In this article, some of these universities in Armenia will be picked up and introduced for those who are interested in the higher education in Armenia.
Armenia University: 5 Most Prestigious Universities in Armenia
When talking about Armenian universities, there are some that stand out because they are considered to be very prestigious, and a lot of young people try very hard to get a chance to study in these universities.
Yerevan State University (YSU)
YSU is one of the oldest universities of Armenia. It was established in 1920. It is a large university with enrollment of about 15,000-19,000 students. YSU also has a branch campus in another city, Ijevan. Yerevan State University is located in the city center of Yerevan, on Alek Manukyan Street.
This university offers the largest variety of studies in Armenia; it has 19 departments including History, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Mathematics, Mechanics, Biology, Law, Oriental Studies, Journalism, and etc.
Actually, the departments of Law as well as International Relations are perhaps the most prestigious places to study. On the other hand, these departments are well known for the luxury cars, newest iPhones and very wealthy students.
Also, majority of graduates of these departments go on to become active members of the political life in Armenia.
AUA was founded in 1991, through a partnership with Armenian Benevolent Union, University of California and the Government of Armenia. AUA is a private and independent university located right in the heart of Yerevan, on Baghramyan Street.
AUA offers three undergraduate degrees, eight graduate degrees as well as several graduate certification programs.
American University of Armenia is definitely another prestigious university in Armenia mainly because its graduates are known to be well-rounded and knowledgeable, and also because it is affiliated with the University of California.
Therefore, it is suitable for these Armenians who want to study in an American University without having to leave the country.
It should be noted though that the competition to enter this university is very high, and not everyone gets a chance to enter here.
French University of Armenia
French University is another internationally managed university in Armenia. It was founded in 2003 through an agreement between the Governments of Armenia and France.
UFAR (abbreviation of Université Française en Arménie /French/) graduates get two types of diplomas; one Armenian Bachelors diploma and one French diploma by its partner, Jean Moulin University Lyon 3. It is the same for Master’s degree.
Even though the university has only 4 departments: Law, Finances, Management and Marketing, the education here is on a very high standard. Students learn French alongside with their studies and part of their classes are conducted in French.
To tell a secret, UFAR graduates keep saying that studying there is very hard and it requires a lot of work and devotion to actually graduate from this university. But, in fact, it doesn’t stop many enthusiastic students from entering this university.
Armenian-Russian (Slavonic) University (RAU)
More known as the Slavonic University, this university stands high on the ranking of higher educational institutions in Armenia.
RAU is a very prestigious university since the level of education is quite high and the education here is only in Russian so that the knowledge of Russian is mandatory for entering the university alongside with other entrance exams.
All of the students here are obviously Russian-speaking and it creates a very interesting atmosphere around the university. In addition, since speaking Russian is considered as an indicator of a well-educated and high-ranked person in Armenia, all those characteristics directly transfer to the university and its student.
RAU is located pretty close to the city center. It has a very large campus which is well equipped offering different professions from Law to Philology and from Foreign Languages to Biology, etc.
Armenian State University of Economics (ASUE)
This University is definitely another prestigious one and it was founded in 1930. It is a medium sized university with about 6000-7000 enrollments and located again in the downtown of Yerevan. ASUE has its branch campuses in other cities of Armenia, Gyumri and Yeghegnadzor.
As the name indicates, it is an Economic University and it offers degrees in Management, Finances, International Economic Relations, Accounting, and etc.
Do you know why it is prestigious as well?
It is because a large number of students nowadays think that economics is the future of everything, and being a professional in that field will benefit them later if they start their own business.
All this may be true, but the fact is that a lot of students come to study here just because it is prestigious. As a result of that, there are always very luxurious cars standing outside the building and majority of students are from wealthy families (of course, this is not to overgeneralize!).
Other 4 Universities in Armenia that should not be forgotten
Besides the above-mentioned prestigious universities, there are also those that stand out among the others with their own strengths.
Yerevan State Brusov University of Languages and Social Sciences
This University was founded in 1935 and is named after Russian poet, prose writer, dramatist, translator, critic and historian, Valery Brusov.
YSLU is more famous around the people as just “Brusov”, so if students of this university get asked where they study, the answer is short and clear, “Brusov”. Yet, everyone will know what they mean.
Now, what makes this university sort of unique is that the majority of students studying there are females: approximately 98% of all students.
It used to be only for linguistic-related subjects while recently, it changed its name to university of languages and social sciences, and started giving out diplomas of social science professions as well. Consequently, the number of male students has risen since then (though not too obvious).
The University is also located in downtown Yerevan, on Tumanyan street and approximately 4000-5000 students are studying.
Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi
Yerevan State Medical University was founded in 1930 on basis of the medical faculty of Yerevan State University which was functioning from 1922.
This university is of medium size with 4000-5000 student enrollments. What makes this university stand out is the number of foreign students studying there, especially from India.
Perhaps, it has the largest number of foreign students compared to other universities in Armenia. This university is also very prestigious and the fee is one of the highest among other higher educational institutions.
Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas (YSC)
Yerevan State Conservatory was founded in 1923 and is named after Komitas, an Armenian priest, musicologist, composer, singer and choirmaster who is considered to be the founder of Armenian national school of music.
The YSC (commonly referred to as just Conservatory) is a higher educational institution which offers higher education in music. It has departments of Piano, Orchestra and Singing-theory.
Of course, they do have smaller faculties of other instruments as well as the separate faculty of national Armenian instruments.
This place is unique with its atmosphere because every time you pass by, you hear the music going on all over the building and the park right in front of it.
Yerevan State Institute of Theater and Cinematography
This institute is a melting pot of creativity, theater, cinema and a lot of fun altogether. When people hear the name of this institute, this is what comes to their mind first: “Too Much Creativity”.
Students studying here are like a big family; each group is assigned a professor who is like the head of their family and takes them through all the four years of study. They stage various performances and learn the tips and tricks of their profession from people who are brilliant in what they do (professors teaching here are very famous Armenian artists).
In short, this institute always attracts potential students with its extraordinary atmosphere and potential careers in the fields of theater, cinematography, animation, and history of theater and theory.
