Arthur Meschian – The Founder of Armenian “Rock”
Arthur Meschian is justly considered as one of the greatest Armenian singers, composers and poets of all time. He is often referred to as one of the forefathers of Armenian rock.
Since his early childhood, Arthur Meschian has been much interested in music and even sang songs in different languages, ranging from English to Hungarian. Meschian went to A. Spendiaryan Music School at the age of seven and took the lessons of violin and piano.
In 1966, Arthur Meschian entered the National Polytechnic University of Armenia in the faculty of architecture. While still at school, he made his first steps in music industry when he joined the boy’s chorus at the Opera and BalletNational Academic Theater. Later, in 1973.
This outstanding musician joined the chorus of the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin for about a year. By the way, this event had a great influence on the formulation of the unique style of Arthur Meschian songs.
Arthur Meschian as an Actor & Life in USA
This Armenian musician alongside with his immense charisma and talent was always on the spotlight of numerous Armenian filmmakers. He got many offers from them to appear in multiple films, but he continuously rejected every single offer.
Nevertheless, famous Armenian film director Rouben Kevorkiants managed to do an offer that Meschian could not refuse. He agreed to play the leading role of prominent Armenian poet Michael Nalbandian. In 1989, this brilliant musician moved to Boston in the USA, along with his family.
There he finally received the opportunity to properly document and record twenty years of Arthur Meschian songs. He released his first album “Catharsis” in 1990. It marked the beginning of Meschian’s new musical and creative path.
He presented his new songs in 2003, when he gave a concert at the famed Kodak Theater (currently Dolby Theatre). After the phenomenal success in the USA he returned to Armenia.

Besides being a great composer and poet this boundlessly talented musician is also an outstanding architect and artist. Few people know that Arthur Meschian is the author of many successful architectural projects.
One of his most famous projects is the new building of Matenadaran (repository of ancient manuscripts). Among his other projects as an architect is the newly-built museum ofthe founder of Armenian national musicology, Komitas, situated in Yerevan.
Fun Fact #2
During the years of 1968 – 1979 he was the lead singer of the “Apostles”. In the history of the Soviet Union this was the first rock band that performed the lyrics of the songs in their native language.
Initially, they began as three students that wanted to create a good music but they gained an immense deal of acclaim and become the voice of younger generation.

Arthur Meschian Songs #1: “Where were you, God?”
Arthur Meschian was still a student when he wrote his early masterpiece “Ur eir Astvats” (Where were you, God?). He first performed it in 1965 in #122 secondary school where he was studying at that time.
By the way, the music and lyrics of “Where were you, God?” are written by Arthur Meschian. This is one of the most famous Arthur Meschian songs that was soon widely acclaimed, but was also quite controversial. This is a very emotional and deep song as it is about the Armenian Genocide in 1915.
To illustrate, let’s note that the lyrics of this composition start with the following sentence: “Where were you god, when an entire abandoned nation went crazy?” Then he continues: “Where were you god, when they were destroying a beautiful country, when the eyes of justice were blind folded, when we were hopelessly praying– Amen?”
However, in the end of this song he asks God to give the Armenian nation strength, light and hope to find him again.
