Dilijan Resort Site #1: Lake Parz (Pure Lake)
One of the treasures of Dilijan is Lake Parz, Armenian for “Pure Lake”. It is a small lake, located in the Dilijan National Park which is considered to be one of Dilijan resort’s most attractive natural sites.
It is situated at a height of 1400 meters (4593 feet) above sea level, with an area of 2 hectares (5 acres) and an average depth of 8 meters (26 feet). This is an ideal place for those who want to relax and stay alone with the wild nature.
Dilijan Resort Site #2: Haghartsin Monastery
Any trip to Dilijan contains visiting several medieval monasteries, famous for their beautiful architecture and nice surroundings. Haghartsin monastery is located near Dilijan resort. It was built between the 10th and 13th centuries.
As the legend goes, when the monastery was built, an eagle was soaring over the dome of the main building, so, it was decided to name the monastery after the playing (or soaring) eagle (“Hagh”, game + “Artsin” or “Artsiv”, eagle).
The monastery consists of different churches, a large gavit (entrance to the church), a huge dining hall and many khachkars (cross-stones: Armenian traditional carved memorial stones). You may also see a massive hollow tree, popular among tourists, who like taking photos of it.
Dilijan Resort Site #3: Goshavank
Another incredible monastery, not far from Dilijan, is the 12th-13th century Goshavank. Here you can see excellently carved architectural details and khachkars. The monastery complex is associated with the name of Mkhitar Gosh, a famous medieval Armenian statesman, scientist and author of the first criminal code.
The complex was later named Goshavank after him (the name of “Gosh” + “Vank” which means “monastery”). Visiting Goshavank is a great opportunity to see Armenian medieval architecture and admire gorgeous views of surrounding mountains.
Dilijan Resort Site #4: Matosavank & Jukhtak
You can also visit Matosavank and Jukhtak Vank Monasteries. Jukhtak Vank Monastery is a small 12th century monastery, located just at the edge of Dilijan. It consists of two separate churches with their surrounding cemeteries.
Matosavank Monastery is located in the forest opposite to Jukhtak Monastery, hidden in a forested area of Dilijan National Park, 3 km northwest from the town of Dilijan resort. The church is currently in ruin and is relatively difficult to find, so, make sure you have a guiding local person to show you the way.
