Erebuni Yerevan is the capital of the Republic of Armenia. As you may know, the official name of the capital of Armenia is Yerevan, but it is accepted to call the city not only Yerevan, but also Erebuni Yerevan.
Erebuni is the old name of the 2798 years old city. Yerevan is about 900-1200 meters above sea level. The city is located on the edge of Ararat valley, on the two banks of Hrazdan River.
Yerevan is one of the eleven administrative regions (also known as marz) of Armenia.
Erebuni Yerevan: Origin of the City and the old Name
When in 1950, inscription by the King Argishi I (King of Urartu Kingdom) was discovered, it became clear that today’s Yerevan was founded by Argishti I and was first called Erebuni.
As centuries and millenniums passed, the original name for some reason was replaced by the new one, which is Yerevan.
Each resident of Yerevan city is proud to live there, because Erebuni Yerevan was founded even 29 years earlier than Rome. Yerevan is about the same age with such cities as Babylon, Nineveh and Persepolis.
The Armenian kingdom of Urartu (Van) or Biainili was formed in the 9th century B.C. near the Lake Van in the Armenian Highlands.
The king Arameh was the founder of the state. The kingdom of Urartu was one of the most developed states of that period.
Erebuni Yerevan: The Origin of the Name “Yerevan”
There are several concepts about the origin of the name “Yerevan”. Some of them date back to the period of Urartu Kingdom, according to which, it originates from the name “Erebuni”.
Many historians claim that the Urartian letter “B” sounds as “V” in modern Armenian. That’s why the name Erebuni has been transformed, becoming Yerevan (Erebuni- Erevuni-Erevani–Erevan-Yerevan).
According to another legend, Noah’s ark landed on Mt. Ararat and as he came out of it, he saw the place of the city of Yerevan. He said the word “yereval” which in Armenian means “to be seen”.
Erebuni Yerevan: “Birth Certificate”
Every person has a birth certificate, but you can hardly find a city, that also has a birth certificate. Well, that may be true for other cities, but not for Erebuni Yerevan.
Actually, Yerevan has a birth certificate, only it is a bit old fashioned and classic one, dating back to 782 B.C.
It’s a stone, or as it is scientifically called, inscription. It has been written by the king Argishti I. In that inscription, you can read:
Biggest Celebrations of Erebuni Yerevan
Erebuni Yerevan’s birthday is one of the most favorite events in the city. It is celebrated every year with a huge preparation, enthusiasm and love. Of course, each year the celebration is a bit different than other years.
The biggest celebration of Erebuni Yerevan during Soviet years, was held in 1968. It was also the first celebration of Erebuni Yerevan. At that time, Soviet Armenians celebrated the 2750th anniversary of the foundation of their capital Erebuni Yerevan.
The biggest celebration of Erebuni Yerevan’s birthday in the Republic of Armenia, after independence, was organized in 2004. It was Erebuni Yerevan’s 2786th anniversary.
The solemn session, called “Erebuni Yerevan’s day”, was dedicated to this holiday. It was held at the State Theatre of Opera and Ballet after A. Spendiaryan on October 13. This event was important because, during this session, symbols of Yerevan, the flag and the anthem “Erebuni Yerevan” were accepted officially.
After starting celebration events, on the same day many concerts dedicated to the one of the world’s most ancient cities, were held in different parts of the city.
Events, dedicated to “Erebuni Yerevan – 2786th birthday”, continued in various forms. There was a sport event taking place on October 13-16. The famous contest of beauty and grace, named “Miss Yerevan 2004”, was held at the National Academic Theater after Gabriel Sundukyan.
Near the “Erebuni” museum, a festive concert was organized. The festival “Yerevan in Songs” was organized in Cascade complex.
A huge concert was held in Republic square. “Yerevan with my eyes” photo-exhibition was opened in Charles Aznavour square.
Like in 1968, in 2004 as well, wine festival was also celebrated. Gala-concert at the “Hrazdan” stadium summed up the chain of amazing events.
The First Celebration of Erebuni Yerevan in 1968
The first official celebration of this beautiful holiday was held in 1968 and was named: “Erebuni Yerevan”. It was a huge event which covered all aspects of the capital city’s life.
In the framework of the 2750th anniversary of Erebuni Yerevan, there were greeting cards published, with the title “Yerevan is 2750”; “Erebuni”, “David of Sasun” stamps were issued, various souvenirs productions were created. Such medals, as “Geghard”, “David of Sasun”, “Argisti I”, “Komitas” were produced.
The scientific session was organized in Matenadaran, cuneiform record of Erebuni Yerevan’s foundation was placed at the crossroad of Nalbandyan and Melik-Adamyan streets, the copper bas-relief of the famous Armenian poet Khachatur Abovyan was placed on the wall of the Armenian Philharmonic building.
Several factories were opened in Yerevan and many more events took place in honor of Erebuni Yerevan’s birthday celebration.
October was chosen as a celebration month. On October 17th, on the Erebuni hill, various events, dedicated to Yerevan’s anniversary, officially take place. Erebuni Street was also officially opened that year.
On October 18th, the emblem of Yerevan was raised in the square after Lenin. The monument called “Seven fountains” was opened.
The most beautiful and amazing one among these events was the citywide festival of song. Festival was held in Victory park (Haghtanaki aygi).
Special Song for Erebuni Yerevan
Edgar Hovhannisyan wrote a special song “Erebuni Yerevan”, which c choir, consisting of 2750 singers, performed for the first time. The day was full of flowers, Victory park’s entry was decorated by 2750 flowers.
As long as Yerevan was and still is very famous for drinking fountains, the municipality decided to place symbolically 2750 fountains in the present-day Republic square (then Lenin square).
Erebuni Yerevan birthday events took place on October 20th at the Republic stadium. The Erebuni museum was opened on October 20.
Among these various events, the film festival had its special place. Many new films, called “Yerevan sketches”, “Yerevan is 2750” were made.
Many books, dedicated to Yerevan, were published in Armenia and Moscow. The most famous one is “Yerevan” guidebook.
But creative ideas were not limited to books, flowers and fountains, organizers also created a special tram-café, called “Erebuni Yerevan”. It was moving along the streets of the beautiful city.
Within the frame of the amazing holiday program, an art exhibition “Yerevan and its residents” was opened in the House of Artists of Yerevan.
Usual celebrations on Erebuni Yerevan Day
On October 1 in 2003, after a long pause the 2785th anniversary of Erebuni Yerevan was celebrated. The whole atmosphere of the celebration was very interesting and cultural.
The most famous Yerevan squares, avenues were decorated by flags, flowers and balloons. In the streets and parks, you could see special organized stages for many talented groups and performers, who dedicated their songs to Yerevan.
After 2003, Yerevan residents usually celebrate “Erebuni Yerevan” holiday on the first weekend of October. In the framework of this holiday, various events take place in Yerevan.
Usually before the beginning of the celebration many streets in the central part of the city are being closed by the municipality. Of course, residents of the city are warned a few days before, which streets will be closed.
There is also a tradition of cleaning and washing streets of Yerevan in different administrative districts. Armenian young volunteers and students participate in the washing of a number of statues and monuments.
Among the most expected events on this day are concerts. On more than 25 stages of the city concerts of classical, rock, jazz music are held in different parts of Erebuni Yerevan.
But the most expected event is the concert in the Republic square. In the end, massive and beautiful fireworks sum up the whole celebration!

Yerevan’s day is a family holiday. You can find interesting events for people of any age. You can find cultural, sport and educational programs to participate. Yerevan residents and city guests take part in celebration events. They go to the Republic square, Yerevan municipality square, Cascade, Northern Avenue, to the center of their administrative districts and take part in exhibitions, concerts, held there.

Besides, the beginning of October is usually the most pleasant part of the year, it’s not too hot and it’s not cold, or rainy at all.

How to get to the city center for the celebration?
It is very easy to get to the Yerevan center. From all administrative districts of Yerevan, buses or mini-buses (marshrutkas) drive to the city center.
Yerevan metro is also working on that day and there are four stations in different parts of the city center. Metro is the fastest and the most reliable way to get to the city center.
You can also take a taxi which will take you to the center from Yerevan’s each corner maximum in 30 minutes.
