How did It All Begin for Hayko?
Ask this question to any Armenian regardless their age and believe you will get quite comprehensive answer. Everybody in Armenia knows that Hayko’s real name is Hayko Hakobyan. He was born in 1973 in Yerevan.
He attended Music School after Tigran Chukhadjyan. Later, he was trained in music at Music College after Romanos Melikyan, and then enrolled in Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory.
In 1996 and 1997 he won the 1st prizes in ‘Moscow 96’ festival and ‘Big Apple’ festival in New York. In 1998, at “Ayo” competition he became the ‘best singer/songwriter. This is how he started his career as a singer.
He is especially famous among locals for his talent of being good at romance music. By the way, his first CD was called “Hayko Romance”. It was released at the very beginning of his career.
However, locals love him as a composer as well. He often writes music for movies, which are warmly welcomed by public. The honored artist of Armenia writes music for other singers as well. The collaborations are usually quite successful.
Hayko is successful in personal life as well. He has a wonderful family. His wife is a singer and designer Anahit Simonyan.

Hayko Song/Composition #2: Don’t Be Scared
This composition is a soundtrack to the eponymous movie. It was shot in 2007. The storyline is the war in Artsakh which took place at the end of the 20th century. A young guy runs away from police in Yerevan and gets to Artsakh.
He becomes one of the soldiers to fight for their land. During the war, he obtains new moral values. He becomes commander. His girlfriend waits for him in Yerevan. Unfortunately, he falls during special operation.
The movie’s motto is “Dedicated to those who are not scared to lose”. Hayko got an award for the music to this film. Armenians like this movie because it touches upon one of most important values of theirs. That value is love toward the fatherland which is everything to every Armenian.
Hayko Song/Composition #3: For Your Love
There is a tendency among Armenian artists to restore folk songs. They always come up with new interpretations and ideas about these songs. The good thing about it is that they always manage to get better results. And the audience is always quite glad to listen to the old songs with new approaches.
Hayko is no exception. In his album called “In one word” he included favorite song “For your love”. Actually what he did is the new arrangement of the song and individual approach. And what cannot a person do for love? This song gives all the answers.

“The Diary of a Cross Thief” is a novel by Armenian writer Raffi. In 2010, director Hrach Keshishyan shot a film based on this novel. The cross thief is a liar and bandit. The movie is about a young cross thief who travels all over the world. He steals, lies and kills during all his journey.
The film was a real success. The cinemas of Yerevan were crowded during the screenings of it. But the part of that success belongs to the composer as well. Hayko was chosen to write the music.
After the movie was released, Hayko got an award for the composition. Locals sometimes joke that it’s better for Hayko to compose than sing. So, witness the journey of the cross thief while listening to the music.
Hayko Song/Composition #5: Evening Yerevan
It’s a common practice among different singers to collaborate and sing in a duet. Another popular Armenian pop singer Christine Pepelyan works with Hayko quite often. Besides they are good friends in real life.
Their cooperative work “Evening Yerevan” belongs to the list of favorite folk songs. The lyrics was written by Vahan Harutyunyan. and Alexandr Achemyan wrote the music.

Hayko Song/Composition #6: Garegin Ndzdeh – Drama
Garegin Nzdeh is one of the profound and important military characters of Armenian history. He fought for our independence. Besides he wrote many books to teach coming generations how to keep fatherland in peace and if needed fight for its freedom with weapons in hands.
To introduce his life and activity, a feature film was shot in 2014. Hayko took the role of the composer once again and created an original work. The music is really fantastic and like comprises different parts.

The motive behind the movie is the Spitak earthquake of 1988. Even though the characters of the family plot are a fiction, the incidents and the scenery is absolutely identical to real events.
