Karen Demirchyan Complex is the largest sports and concerts complex in Yerevan where you can enjoy not only various concerts but also figure skating shows.
Armenia is known to the world with both its culture and creative ideas. Since the 19th century, Yerevan has appeared before the world as one of the most essential and significant centers of Armenian culture and its development.
The evidence of these are the cultural centers, the works of art that are spread all over the country and especially in the capital. Some of the most famous music and concert halls of Armenia are Aram Khachatryan music hall, Concert hall after Arno Babajanyan, Chamber Music Hall after Komitas but today we are going to talk about Karen Demirchyan Sport-Concert Complex.
Karen Demirchyan Complex: General information
Karen Demirchyan Complex is officially named as Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex but it also has several other names: Demirchyan Arena, Sports & Music Complex, or just Hamalir (means complex in Armenian).
It represents a large sports and concerts complex that has a unique and outstanding design. The construction of the complex reminds the shape of a bird that has opened its wings.
Are you interested to know whose name the complex bears? It is named in honor of the former speaker of the Armenian parliament Karen Demirchyan. He had a great contribution in the construction and the renovation of the sports and concerts complex.
There are two main and quite big halls in the complex; the concert hall (has a capacity of 2,008 seats) and the sport hall (has 8,008 seats). Along with these halls it also has a huge foyer, Hayastan conferences hall and Argishti hall that are very suitable for diplomatic meetings, fairs and exhibitions and other significant events.
In addition, the complex has a unique architectural concept for which its architects were awarded the USSR State Prize. The concept represents a turning tribune of 1,008 seats that is connecting the two large halls and thus introducing some additional seating.
Karen Demirchyan Complex: Location
For those who are in Yerevan and want to enjoy a nice time in the complex, here is some information about the location. It is situated in the western part of the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, near the Hrazdan River gorge. Its location is right on Tsitsernakaberd hill, moreover there are 184 stairs that lead up the hill.
If you are interested in how to get there then there are several options. If you like walking, then you can take a map and get there on foot if you live not far away from the city centre. Or you can just take a bus (cost 100AMD) or a taxi (about 600-1000AMD).
Karen Demirchyan Complex: Interesting Facts
The renovation process started immediately but it was long and lasted until the end of 1987. Nonetheless, it helped to turn the complex into a modern and high level sports and concerts arena. Today the architectural value of this complex is pretty huge as its construction is very complicated.
It is semi-circular and furthermore is located on a bumpy hill. The main entrance is decorated with ornaments made from tuf that beautifies the structure even more. This enormous complex was constructed and renovated by the help of the chief engineer Hamlet Badalyan, along with I. Tsaturian, A. Azizian and M. Aharonian.
Who owns the complex today?
Some years ago, in 2005 the complex was sold to the Russian BAMO Holding Company at a price of US$5.7 million.
Former Armenian president Robert Kocharian put forward two conditions. He urged that the name of the complex should stay the same and that it must maintain its functional meaning. The holding agreed to his conditions.
However, in 2014 the owners of that organization had some accumulated debts, that’s why the Armenian government managed to transfer the ownership of Karen Demirchyan complex to the Ministry of Defense.
In 2015 the government of Armenia sold the complex to NTAA Investment Group LLC for $30 million. Shortly after acquiring the complex the company plans to spend 4 years for turning the complex into a family-oriented center that will be the first of its kind in Armenia.
Karen Demirchyan Complex: Essential Events
Since the beginning of its foundation the complex has hosted the concerts of the most renowned and famous Armenian musicians and composers, like Andre, Hayko, Djivan Gasparyan, Flora Martirosyan and many others.
Not to mention the fact that it has also hosted many worldwide known and outstanding celebrities, bands and singers, like Lara Fabian and Joe Cocker.
Back in May 1990 English brilliant songwriter and lead singer of Deep Purple, Ian Gillan, visited Armenia. He played four concerts at the Karen Demirchyan Complex with his group.
Generally speaking, Karen Demirchyan complex has hosted the concerts of such rock legends as:
- Jethro Tull (on 22 May 2009)
- British rock band Uriah Heep (on 16 October 2009)
- The lead vocalist of System Of A Down, Serj Tankian, with his solo concert (on 12 August 2010)
- Russian rock-band DDT (In June 2013)
But probably the biggest and long awaited event that took place at Karen Demirchyan complex is the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
Previously on Armenia got its first Junior Eurovision victory in 2010. Due to the talented Armenian boy Vladimir Arzumanyan Armenia won the concert with his song “Mama”.
By the way, on November 20, 2015 unprecedented ice show was held in Armenia at Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex entitled as “Ice Kings”. The show included the world’s best figure skaters’ professional performances.
