Good Old Days of Karen Karapetyan as the Mayor of Yerevan
Long before “September 13, 2016”, Karen Karapetyan has been recalled by the overwhelming majority of Armenians as the Mayor of Yerevan who won the hearts of many Armenians with his enthusiasm and “drive”.
Actually “drive” is the first word that springs to the average Armenian’s mind when thinking about Karapetyan. Why, you may ask?
The thing is that, while delivering a speech at the press conference dedicated to his 100 days as Mayor, Karen Karapetyan said, “It’s very interesting here. As they say, I get a drive.”
After that, the word “drive” became associated with Karen Karapetyan and was used by both his supporters, opponents and of course, comedians.
However, Karen Karapetyan was not so much accepted as a Mayor by many Armenians, especially Armenian vendors.
Just one month into his office as Mayor, Karapetyan sparked the 2011 Armenian protests when he ordered the municipality to enforce a strict ban on street trading.
Angry street vendors took to the streets to call for Karapetyan’s resignation and the repeal of the ban. Karapetyan refused to reconsider a controversial ban on street trade in Yerevan, insisting the municipality has already offered the vendors trading space at various indoor markets.
Resignation and His Own Explanation to It
Though due to this controversial ban tensions ran high among the citizens of Yerevan, now many streets in Yerevan are more beautiful with a lot of flowers and trees without street trading.
Karapetyan resigned as Mayor on 28 October 2011 leaving many Armenians (except surely angry vendors) broken hearted and without “drive”.
So, Karapetyan returned to Russia to continue working for “Gazprom”.
Karen Karapetyan in Politics
Karen Karapetyan has entered into Armenian politics when he became the Mayor of Yerevan. Karapetyan was very promising in this position and the residents of Yerevan pinned great hopes on him.
However, after a year Karapetyan resigned leaving millions of Armenians disappointed, but in vain!
On September 13, 2016 Karapetyan has stepped into Armenia’s second-most-important position, the prime ministership, after the resignation of Hovik Abrahamyan.
Armenians were very satisfied with this appointment, which is a rare thing in Armenian reality taking into account that Armenians almost always slam the decisions of authorities.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan called the new premier a “symbol of change’’.
It was said that Karapetyan’s new Government would bring sweeping changes and reforms to the country and economy.
Does Karen Karapetyan Consider Himself a Politician?
It is interesting to mention that one of the most powerful figures in Armenian Politics still doesn’t consider him a politician.
When Karapetyan was asked “do you view yourself as a politician?” (Mediamax News Agency) he answered;
I will put it like this: I am gradually becoming. But I have never had the desire or ambition to become a politician. Moreover, had someone told me a year or two ago that I would become a politician, I would probably respond with a smile. I have never even dreamt of becoming Armenian Prime Minister.
Although this is hard work, it also gives me, as a person with experience in management and Armenian citizen, the opportunity to serve my country. I wish that Armenia once becomes a country, which children of our compatriots and my own would never consider to leave.
Karen Karapetyan as “The Reformer” Prime Minister
Karen Karapetyan was appointed as the PM of Armenia for his experience in the municipality, his managerial skills and personal qualities, which many believe would allow him and his team to change the country for the better.
One of the reasons that the Armenian politician is accepted by the Armenian nation is his sincerity. He was the one who declared that the country’s economy is in a bad state and it needs structural overhaul.
The Prime Minister and his team have proposed the most rapid change that’s possible and from 2018 they are expecting to have sustainable year-on-year growth.
Will Karapetyan Stay as a Prime Minister after 2018?
Many experts thought that President Serzh Sargsyan will become Prime Minister when the new political system goes into effect in 2018. This means some more months and Karapetyan will leave the office.
However, President Serzh Sargsyan put this speculation to rest in his speech at the RPA’s Sixteenth Congress in Yerevan.
He declared that Karen Karapetyan will continue heading the Armenian cabinet if the Republican Party of Armenia receives a vote of confidence in the 2017 parliamentary election.
The ruling Republican Party of Armenia won 58 of the 105 seats in the National Assembly as a result of Parliamentary elections held on 2 April 2017.
This is undoubtedly great news for Karapetyan’s supporters, isn’t it?
Karen Karapetyan in a Hot Pre-Election Campaign
Recently Karen Karapetyan became the face of the Republican Party actively participating in the pre-election campaign together with Arpine Hovhannisyan, the Minister of Justice (also one of the most beautiful female ministers in the entire world) and Vigen Sargsyan, the Minister of Defense.
Before elections the Republican Party released a music-video entitled “Let’s change the world” which was performed by “Reincarnation”, an Armenian reggae band.
The music video features many famous Armenians, such as musician Narek Hakhnazaryan, boxing champion Arthur Abraham, Chess Grandmaster Levon Aronian, the shining star of Manchester United Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Now try to guess why “Let’s change the world” has become so popular? Maybe thanks to the rhythms and positive vibes the song gives? Yes! What else? Maybe thanks to famous Armenians in the music video?
Of course, you are right, but the music video wouldn’t become the talk of the entire country without the participation of the “super star” of Armenian Government who played drums in the music video.
On this positive note let’s go through the following link and enjoy this hyper positive and catchy song.
