What is Nairi or Nairian Armenia?
Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world with a recorded history of about 3500 years. But from the very beginning of its history, instead of “Armenia”, the term “Nairi” was used to refer to the land were Armenians, “the people of Nairi” used to live.
The area included 60 different tribes, small kingdoms and about 100 cities. People in this land were an alliance of tribes led by the dominant tribe “Nairi”, which existed until late 13th century BC.
The Nairi alliance was based around Lake Van, which together with the Ararat Valley had the most fertile land in Western Asia, as well as the largest mineral deposits in Asia Minor and Mesopotamia.
People here were very rich. They had horses, mules and a large chariot force.
Assyrians never succeeded in completely subjugating the Nairi, but within 200 years its influence waned through the rise of a related tribe, the Urartu.
As the Urartian kingdom rose to become one of the greatest powers in the region, the term “Nairi” and “Nairian” was no longer mentioned in the history.
However, Armenian generations never forgot about the history of Proto-Armenians. As a result, the terms “Nairi” and “Nairian” are still used to refer to Armenia and Armenians.
Popularity of Nairi in Nairian Armenia
Nowadays there are no villages or cities called “Nairi” in Armenia, and neither is the country where Armenians live called “The Republic of Nairi”.
Instead, Nairi is a popular first name for both Armenian boys and girls (“Nairi” for boys and “Nairuhi” for girls).
Though, today many Armenian couples tend to choose modern names for their babies, millions of Armenians who especially live in foreign countries do their best to instill patriotism in their children.
Such parents make their kids speak Armenian, listen to Armenian music, eat Armenian traditional dishes, visit Armenia during holidays, and even marry an Armenian, etc.
The real patriots also choose an Armenian name for their children (Hayastan which stands for Armenia, Ararat, Karin, Ani, Shushi, etc). Nairi is among those names.
There is even an Armenian writer, Hayastan Yeghiazarian who used Nairi Zarian as his pen name, replacing his first name “Hayastan” (Armenia”) with “Nairi”.
“Nairi” and “Nairian Armenia” in Armenian Literature
By the way, the words “Nairi” and “Nairian” are widely used by Armenians as poetic synonyms of the words “Armenia” and “Armenian”.
