In spite of its small sizes, Armenia is known as a country rich with fresh water resources. You’ll find number of rivers and streams in Armenia.

Rivers in Armenia #1 | Akhurian
Akhurian is the third largest river in Armenia. The river starts from the lake Arpa, which is located at the north-western part of the country.
In this area, Akurian is a muddy and a non-welcoming river. Though the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan later.
Several streams pour into Akhurian river on its road and the river enters Shirak valley as a one of the major rivers of Armenia. Here it gets even larger as it welcomes some streams from Aragats as well.
The river flows along the closed border with Turkey, so it forms kind of a natural border with Armenia and Turkey.
The final destination of Akhurian is Araks River. The list of the rivers which flow into Araks is large, by the way.
There were number of medieval bridges on Akhurian as this river flowed in once one of the most marvelous cities, Ani. The remaining of those medieval bridges are preserved till today.
At the right shore of the river is Gyumri, the second largest city of Armenia, on the right shore is Ani, one of the most beautiful capitals of historical Armenia.
By the way there is a huge reservoir on this river, which was constructed in 1925. The reservoir improved the condition of irrigation in Armenia.
Rivers in Armenia #2 | Metsamor
Another major river in Armenia is Mestamor river. Mestamor flows from Aragats mountain and flows into the lake Sevan.
In general, rivers in Armenia are not always stable in their flow. Depending on climate changes they are either calm or turbulent and fast.
Mestamor river is almost always calm and stable. It is considered one of the most stables rivers in Armenia.
Metsamor River is also known with the name Sevjur which is translated as “black water”. The the origin of the name is not clear. This river doesn’t hurry anywhere and passes its road slowly.
Shores of the river are very often muddy. By the way near the flow of the river and also at the muddy parts of it you’ll see lot of little cute beaver. They are specially bred in this as the geographical location is perfect for them.
Before flowing into Araks river, Metsamor becomes one of the major rivers in Armenia by being mixed with Kasagh.
Rivers in Armenia #3 | Kasagh
Kasagh is the largest stream of Mestamor River. The headwaters of the Kasagh are two tiny rivers, one of them flows from Aragats, the other flows from Pambak mountain chain.
Depending on its location, Kasagh flows either fast and slow. You can see Kasagh river in its full beauty in Ashtarak gorge and Oshakan village.
Kasagh forms several streams before flowing into Metsamor. Almost the whole waters of Karagh are used for irrigation.
That’s the reason why, unfortunately, the lake fully dries up in summer seasons. The water of Karakh river is reserved in Aparan reservoir.
Rivers in Armenia #4 | Hrazdan
Hrazdan is another major river in Armenia which flows in Yerevan as well. This river makes the city scene much more adorable and the air fresh.
Hrazdan gorge is a favorite place for locals. They like having picnics here. You’ll meet number of cafes and restaurants near the shore of Hrazdan gorge.
By the way Hrazdan river has one major distinctive feature in the list of Rivers in Armenia. Hrazdan is the only river in Armenia, which flows from the lake Sevan.
Passing from Yerevan, Hrazdan reaches its final destination, Araks river. There are number of reservoirs built on this river both in Yerevan and other regions in Yerevan.
The artificial Yerevan lake is also built as a huge reservoir of Hrazdan river. Unfortunately, today the river faces huge problem of pollution because some of Yerevan factory waste. This is one of the most serious environmental issues of Armenia nowadays.
There are number of huge bridges built on Hrazdan bridge in Yerevan. The best-known ones are Victory bridge and great Hrazdan Bridge (also known as Kievyan bridge).
Rivers in Armenia #5 | Arpa
Arpa is one of the most magnificent rivers in Armenia. Apra is not the longest or the most turbulent, however one thing is clear: it’s definitely the most beautiful river in Armenia.
Arpa is known for its extremely amazing views the beauty of which is impossible to ignore. The river is either turbulent or calm depending on its location. Arpa originates in Vayots Dzor province and flows into Aras river.
Arpa River gorge is one of the picturesque sites of Armenia. Arpa river makes Armenia’s sightseeing list even more welcoming.
You’ll also see Gngevank, Areni church, the ruins of Moze city near the river. In Vayots Dzor province, near the village Kechut, you’ll also see Kechut reservoir which is built from Arpa River. This is another sight which is worth seeing in Armenia!
By the way, Arpa is the only river in Armenia the flow of which is in the opposite direction.
Rivers in Armenia #6 | Vorotan
Vorotan is a major river of Syunik province. Even the name Vorotan tells a lot about this river itself. The word vorotan is translated as noisy, turbulent in Armenian.
Indeed, Vorotan is a quite turbulent river. Like many of the rivers in Armenia, Vorotan river finally flows into Araks.
Vorotan is one of the fastest flowing rivers in Armenia. There are number of smalls rivers and streams flowing into vorotan river.
Rivers in Armenia #7 | Debed
Another major river in Armenia, which is known for its turbulence.
The turbulence of the river in rainy season sometimes rises to such levels that it causes huge damages at some parts. That’s why the most dangerous areas of the river are bounded with gates.
You can see the full beauty of this river in Lori province, together with green forest and fresh air. Debed flows in Armenia and Georgia.
This river is known in Armenia as a river with restless nature. It’s mentioned in Armenian literature as well. The main character of Hovhannes Tumanyan’s famous poem “Anoush” throws herself in this river and commits suicide.
