Things to Do in Hrazdan #1: Take a Train Trip to Hrazdan
Hrazdan is not far from the capital city of Armenia, Yerevan. There is about 40 kilometers distance between Yerevan and Hrazdan, so very often taking a train trip is rather convenient and fun. During your train journey to Hrazdan you can enjoy your time and why not, take a look at the marvelous nature of Armenia.
When you reach Hrazdan, you’ll immediately notice the colorings and feel the old style Soviet building. Yes, it’s the train station of Hrazdan. Hrazdan train station will interest those who are fond of old mysterious and gloomy buildings.
The building of Hrazdan train station definitely needs reconstruction, however, it may admire now with its old look which contains so much history. Sometimes, in this part of the city you may even have a feeling like you’re losing reality and being transferred to a completely other period of time and that Soviet era hasn’t ended yet.
Things to Do in Hrazdan #2: Hrazdan Branch of State Gallery
Visiting Hrazdan Branch of State Gallery for those who appreciate fine arts is one of the must things to do in Hrazdan. Here you’ll find some of the canvases of the most famous Armenian painters, such as Hovhannes Ayvazovsky and Hakob Kojoyan.
Well, the building of the gallery is a rather small and modest, however, it doesn’t give ground to underestimate the value of the paintings inside of it.
By the way, it’s not much like the Yerevan Branch of State Gallery. The place is rather calm and you’ll hardly meet many visitors there. On one hand it’s cool, as it’s more likely you’ll enjoy the artworks alone in calming silence. It’s like a dream, that all of us have!
Things to Do in Hrazdan #3: Geological Museum of Hrazdan
Another Soviet era gloomy looking old building. The museum is rather large and includes in itself several departments. Those are the department of archeology, ethnology, department of new times and the department for temporary exhibitions.
The aim of the museum is introducing the full history of Kotayk Province beginning from ancient times till our days. The cost of the ticket is 200 Dram (less than 50 cents). You can also hire tours in the museum which will cost 1500 dram (3 dollars).
The number of exhibitionss in the museum reaches 2818 and the 1877 of which are basic fund. Here you’ll see even a teeth and bones of an ancient mammoth excavated from Hrazdan Lake. So those who are interested in history and archeology consider you’ve found one more thing to do in Hrazdan.
Things to Do in Hrazdan #4: Hrazdan Dramatic Theater
Hrazdan Dramatic theater offers you another nice option in your things to do in Hrazdan list. The theater was founded in 1953. Since then there were number of successful performances in this theater.
The history of the theater is full of ups and downs. Until becoming the official town dramatic theater of Hrazdan, the theater used to be called independently employed theater from 1953 to 1961. Then turned into national theater from 1961-1989, and regional theater from 1989-2000.
Only in 2000 the theater was finally remained Hrazdan town dramatic theater. The years of theater career were rather fertile including several successful performances such as “Charlys Aunt”, “Fancy Dance Ball”, “Minas” etc.
The latest performance was dedicated to great Armenian painter Minas Avetisyan which won special awards in 1997. The performance was highly praised and brought great acknowledgment to the theater.
At the moment, Hrazdan town theater is working on a new performance called “Toros Roslin”. Toros Roslin is also another renowned Armenian medieval painter.
Things to Do in Hrazdan #5: Tsovinar Lake
Visit to Tsovinar Lake will be a cool thing to do if you want to spend your time in nature and beautiful surrounding. The lake is a rather small one and is not very much known among non-locals. But it’s definitely wonderful place to visit if you want to organize your rest in a calm atmosphere.
You’ll rarely meet any other people there as there is no special area for rest. It’s more for those who prefer wild rest.
By the way, the lake has its special legend. It is said that many years ago there was a fresh water spring near the Lake Sevan. Locals were using the water carefully and closed the water tap after using it. One day a new bride, beautiful Tsovinar forgets to close the water tap. Afterwards poor Tsovinar was cursed and turned into a stone.
The water flowed the whole night and formed today’s lake which was called Tsovinar.
Things to Do in Hrazdan #6: Makravan Monastry Complex
Makravan is a medieval Armenian monastery complex which is located in the Makravan District of Hrazdan. This unique monastery complex includes one half-ruined church of 11 century and one church of 13th century.
Both churches belong to the typical medieval Armenian architectural style. The church which is dedicated to St Astvatsatsin is a rather large one with engraved crosses and other images on the walls. Besides the churches, you’ll also see lot of cross stones (Khachkars) on the yard of the Monastery complex.
Khachkars are the unique treasures of culture of Armenia. The word Cross stone already prompts you what it is: a stone engraved with crosses. The thematic of majority of khachkars are crosses.
However, there are also some exceptions of khachkars which include other images. In Makravank you’ll see also khachkars and tombstones.
Things to Do in Hrazdan #7: Hrazdan River
Hrazdan river is the second largest river of Armenia, which is 141 kilometers long. Hrazdan River originates from the largest lake of Armenia Sevan.
By the way, Hrazdan river is the only river that originates from Sevan. The view of the river is absolutely excellent and calming.
Things to Do in Hrazdan #8: Marmarik River
Marmarik river is lesser known place of interest in Armenia. Visiting Marmarik River will be a great thing to do if you’re fond of long walks and wild nature.
If you want to add some extreme to your tours, visit the river in winters. The surrounding of the river is especially marvelous in winters.
