Where is Yerevan and Where It Historically was Located?
Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. It is also the largest city of Armenia and is one of the oldest inhabited cities of the world. Yerevan is the most developed city of Armenia and it’s considered Armenia’s cultural, industrial administrative center. Yerevan has been serving as the capital of Armenia since 1918.
It’s located in Ararat valley. However, the history of Yerevan comes from ancient times when king Argishti I founded the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC. Already from that period Yerevan was fully planned to be cultural administrative and religious center for the country.
Yerevan passed a long historical path and has faced several invasions during its history. In the 16th century, from 1735 during the period of Iranian rule it was the center of Iran’s Erivan Khante. In 1828 Yerevan was a part of Imperial Russia.
The New Era for Yerevan
Yerevan became the capital of the First Republic of Armenia after the World War I. The Soviet Union period was revolutionary for Yerevan. Yerevan started blossoming especially from 20th century when it stopped being a provincial town in the Russian Empire and became the main cultural and industrial centre of Armenia.
The genius architect Alexandr Tamanyan took a very responsible role of being the main architect of Yerevan. He dealt with this job with great honor and made the city one of the most beautiful cities.
Very often, Yerevan is called “Pink City” because of the color of the stone of which the most of Yerevan buildings are made.
The city is divided into several districts, Kentron is the downtown and the cultural center of Yerevan. The main touristic sites are situated exactly here. There are also other districts such as Ajapnyak, Arabkir, Erebuni, Shengavit, Nor Nork etc. Yerevan is a homogeneous city. The majority of the population are Armenians.

Yerevan is located in the Ararat valley, on the edge of Hrazdan River. The average height is 990 m above sea level. Hrazdan River with its attractive canyon divides the city into two parts.
Armenia is divided into provinces which are called marz in Amenian. Though Yerevan is not considered a marz, it borders some of them: Kotayk, Ararat, Armavir and Aragatsotn are the provinces which have borders with Yerevan.
Yerevan has a steppe climate. All seasons are demonstrated with their full colors. Summers are long hot and dry and winters are short, but rather cold and snowy. Because of its location, Yerevan’s climate demonstrates its all peculiarities.
The sea effect is far from Yerevan, as it’s surrounded by mountains from all parts. Sometimes summers are even too hot and the temperature can reach even 40 °C. In this case, it’s preferable not to get out of the house, or at least not to forget hats and umbrellas.
The average temperature in winters is -15°C, however it depends. Armenian winters can be rather freezing one year and mild another year. It’s widely accepted that Yerevan belongs to those cities which have the most beautiful autumns in the world. There are quite a lot of things to do and to see in Yerevan. So, in spite of the season you’ll never get bored there.
Though the life is more active in summers, never avoid of nice walks in winters, it will definitely be fun! Even if you feel cold, you can go one of the cozy cafes there and warm up with a cup of tea or coffee.
Where is Yerevan by Its Culture and Architecture?
Yerevan is a city full of art and culture. There are quite a lot museums, galleries and other historical places to visit. Very often Yerevan is called an Open-Air Museum. As Yerevan is one of the oldest cities of the world, it includes a lot of cultural elements belonging to different historical periods.
One of the vivid examples of Yerevan’s rich cultural heritage is the fortress of Erebuni situated at Karmir Blur. Being built in 782 BC, it’s an extremely valuable historical site, which belongs to the most frequently visited places of tourists.
