Yerevan Cascade is a Cultural Treasure for Armenia
History of Yerevan Cascade draws back to early 20th century, when Yerevan was just on its way of being formed as a capital. Cascade was originally designed by famous architect Alexander Tamanyan.
He designed Yerevan Cascade with the aim to connect northern and central parts of the city. Unfortunately, he didn’t manage to fulfill his plan and the plan of cascade remained forgotten for many years.
The construction of Yerevan Cascade complex began in 1970-s by Jim Torosyan. Yerevan Cascade complex was established in 1980-s, but it was not properly worked on and wasn’t a sightseeing for people.
Already at the beginning of 2000-s Armenian businessman and philanthropist Gerard Cafesjian took the responsibility of modernizing and representing Yerevan Cascade in the new style and colorings.
However, Torosyan did some additions in the original project, such as the indoor complex which includes escalators inside. You’ll find number of halls in the complex.
In other words, Yerevan Cascade is another representation of rich Armenian cultural heritage. Today Cascade is one of the most favorite places of both locals and foreigners.
Cafesjian Center for the Arts in Yerevan Cascade
Cafesjian Center for the fine arts was officially opened in 2009 by Gerard Cafesjian. The greatest aim of the center was to bring contemporary art to Armenia and also introduce Armenian culture to the world.
Cafesjian is a unique complex which is one of the major factors making Yerevan Cascade so much visited. You can see extraordinary pieces of art on every step while being in Yerevan Cascade Complex.
However, your visit to Yerevan Cascade Complex will not be complete until you enter inside the complex. There you’ll see several halls with exhibitions. Besides the fixed exhibitions, Cafesjian Center for the Arts constantly holds various exhibitions dedicated to different themes.
Gallery One, Museum Store, Khanjyan Gallery, Sasuntsi Davit Gallery and Swarovski Crystal Palace exhibitions are completely free for the visitors. Other exhibitions cost 1000 AMD (about 2 dollars) for adults.
Cafes and Restaurants near Yerevan Cascade
Don’t take Yerevan Cascade only as a sightseeing. You’ll have many other variants of spending your time there. One of those are cafes restaurants and even pubs which are located near Cascade.
As a whole, it is generally accepted that bunch of best cafes are located especially Yerevan Cascade Complex. Well, judging whether it is true or not, is up to you!
Visit Yerevan Cascade in the Evenings
Yerevan Cascade complex is especially crowded in the evenings. One of the reasons it’s crowded in the evening is that everyone is hurrying to watch Yerevan nights from the top, because Yerevan nights are something worth seeing.
There is also a largely accepted idea, that if you haven’t seen Yerevan at nights, then you haven’t seen Yerevan in its full colors.

Artworks which are located in the outside part of Yerevan Cascade Complex make the place very attractive as sightseeing. Walking in Cascade you’ll notice really a huge variety of artworks which will amuse you.
Some of them may even seem kind of weird and not easy to understand at first. Yeah, this is contemporary art. Some of the artworks are being constantly changed and replaced by new ones. Some of them become favorite ones among Armenians very soon, others remain surrounded with controversial opinions.
However, one thing is clear: everybody likes visiting Yerevan Cascade Complex and discuss the newest and old artworks with great passion. Many of them are very famous both among locals and foreigners.
The Most Notable Artworks of Yerevan Cascade
One of them is the giant statue of a kiwi. Don’t worry about missing this statue as it’s literally impossible. While visiting Cascade one of the first things which will capture your attention will definitely be this huge blue Kiwi, which became loved very soon. Many confess that the statue gives positive vibes and makes your day.
Another famous artwork located in Yerevan Cascade complex is the “Smoking Woman” by world famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The sculpture was not accepted unanimously: a chubby woman of middle ages smoking a cigarette.
Some visitors did not agree with the sculpture and consider it far from being attractive. However, there are also great admirers of the sculpture who estimated the real value of the artwork.
Another controversial sculpture by famous artist is the sculpture of fat cat. Well it doesn’t look like an ordinary cat statue. It’s a statue of u huge fat black cat. Many of the visitors say that its immense size and black color are sometimes alarming, though it’s difficult to admit that the statue has a special attraction in it.
The statue is one of the most famous ones in Cascade. Every day you’ll see lot of visitors take photos with this capturing statue. Yeah, and it’s also a very famous meeting spot!
