Newspapers form a large part of the culture of every country and, particularly, every city.
Armenia and Yerevan are no exception.
This says, news media bout Yerevan always talks about something very interesting, entertaining and sometimes concerning to a certain extend.
The good thing about Armenian newspapers is that majority of them are published both online and offline.
What you should know about News Media about Yerevan?
Yerevan is a relatively large city populated by some 1 million people. This makes it the largest city and the capital of the Republic of Armenia.
People living here pay a lot of attention to what’s going on in their community, their city and the world in general. Thus, there are variety of newspapers, several news agencies that publish their periodicals here as well as in other cities and villages of Armenia.

Some of the most famous and trustworthy newspapers are:
- Armenpress
- Panarmenian news agency
- Hetq (translated as Trace)
The last one specializes particularly in investigative journalism.
Where you can find these periodicals?
In general, there are several main destinations where you can find and buy Armenian newspapers. These are special newspaper kiosks designed by the City hall municipality services.
They are located in different parts of the city, as well as, in different regions of Armenia. They do represent almost all the variety of Armenian newspapers. So, in that sense they make a perfect place to buy your daily newspaper.
Generally, in Armenia, there is no such thing as delivering you the newspaper you are subscribed to. We can see this in many Hollywood movies, when a young boy/girl rides his bike and delivers the Sunday newspapers to the doors. But that doesn’t happen in Armenia, you have to go and buy your own copy of the newspapers.

The reason for this might be the vanishing tradition of reading newspapers. Not everyone likes reading a newspaper, not anymore. Majority of people reading Yerevan news or other newspapers are mainly elderly, who don’t use the modern gadgets.
There is one more sector of readers; those who enjoy the ritual of reading a newspaper every morning with a cup of tea or coffee.
Anyway, walking around in different parts of the city will definitely get you to a newspaper kiosk, where you can get not only fresh newspapers and periodicals, but also crosswords, chewing gums and different chocolate bars.
Let’s talk in details about some of the Yerevan News providers, and news providers for the whole Armenia in general.
Yerevan News: Armenpress News Agency
Armenpress was the very first state news agency of Armenia. It was established in 1918 by the government of the first republic of Armenia.
Currently, it is available only in the online version and in 4 languages; Armenian, Russian, English and Arabic. Armenpress stays one of the most influential and most credible news sources of Armenia. Notably, they are members of four international press organizations.
We can say that this news agency, being the oldest one in Armenia, is the official voice of the Armenian government (the government is also holding the full package of the company’s shares).
Many people might think the information they provide is biased, because it is sponsored by the state, but no. They try their best to provide the readers with quality, credible and trustworthy information.
An indicator showing how reliable they are is the list of their clients; foreign embassies represented in Armenia, banks, analytical organizations, international organizations, sure enough news outlets, just to name a few.
Despite being a very old periodical, this news agency does a very good job with keeping up with the modern technologies. It is present in almost all social networking sites.
This news agency is one of the few that has a verified Facebook page, as well as it indexed in Google news, Bing news international search tools.
Yerevan News: Panarmenian News Agency
This agency was the first online Armenian news agency. It was established in 2000. According to them, they are the most cited Armenian informational resource in the world. This is a very serious achievement; being the number one in Armenia.
They provide their readers with news, analytics, photo sets as well as topic-peculiar information.
- They launched PAN photo agency in 2009 which is one of a kind in Armenia and it stands out with the large number of events covered, as well as the professionalism of the photographers and the high quality of their equipment.
- PanArmenian news agency, too, is a very modern news provider, it is present and active in social media; namely, they are a verified page on Facebook, also.
In general, this news agency is another one that provides unbiased Yerevan news, as well as news from other parts of the country, from the region, also from the world in general. They are considered to be a very credible source.
Yerevan News: Hetq.am- Investigative journalism
Hetq (translated as trace) is one of a kind periodical. It was founded in 2001 by the Association of Investigative Journalists NGO, which was later renamed to Investigative Journalists NGO.
This online newspaper was initially being updated every Monday. Then its articles and investigations would get printed in offline newspapers as Azg (Nation), Aravot (Morning), Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Times) and 168 zham (168 hours).
It is being updated daily since 2008. They provide content in three languages; Armenian, English and Russian.
What is so special about Hetq. Hetq, perhaps, is the most famous investigative journalism agency that tries to act independently from the government. During recent years they have managed to uncover various topics and problems, they were able to dig deep into the problem and see where it came from, thus being able to provide some solutions to resolve it.
It also received an honor by the Armenian branch of Transparency International for its contribution to the struggle against corruption in Armenia.
This is well deserved, because so many people trust them and consider them credible. And they never let anyone doubt their independence, their credibility and passion for uncovering the “ugly truth”.
