Yerevan State Linguistic University was established in 1935 was named after Russian poet and historian Valery Brusov in 1962. Everybody calls it YSLU in short.
In a country where education is highly accentuated, Yerevan State Linguistic University is located in the heart of Yerevan. Funny enough, 90% of the students at YSLU are female, making the streets surrounding the building a fashionable spot.
Since very few male students attend the university, it’s a common joke that boys are treated as royalty since they are hardly ever seen in the building. Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences is thought to be the leading institute in the fields of linguistics and social sciences.
Initially established as Russian Language Teachers’ Institute as a 2-year intermediate college on February 4, 1935, by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia, it soon became Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute.
How many times has Yerevan State Linguistic University After V. Brusov (YSLU) been renamed?
The university has gone through a lot of changes over the years. The number of times its name has changed stands out the most. It has been called:
- Yerevan State Russian Language Teachers’ Institute in 1940.
- Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute of the Russian and Foreign Languages after V. Brusov in 1962.
- Yerevan State Institute of Foreign Languages after V. Brusov in 1997.
- Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov in 2001.
- Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences in 2014.
A year after the university was founded, the German language section was opened. French and English languages followed in 1937. That same year, the first teachers of Russian language graduate from YSLU.
The Soviet government awarded Yerevan State Linguistic University with the Order of Friendship of Nations in 1985. Over the years, more than 18,000 students have graduated from Yerevan State Linguistic University.
Students become specialists in Russian, English, French, German, Greek, Spanish languages, practical psychology, history, political science and area studies. Structural changes are no news to YSLU.
New faculties and departments are formed almost every year that provide the opportunity to produce professionals in new fields.
Faculties that Yerevan State Linguistic University After Brusov (YSLU) offers for obtaining a Bachelor’s degree:
- Faculty of Russian and Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication
- Faculty of Translation and Intercultural Communication
- Faculty of Foreign Languages
The Faculty of Russian and Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication was founded at the very beginning of the institute in 1935, but was reconstructed in 2013 to provide bachelor programs. These programs include:
- Linguistics and Russian language.
- Russian Literature. Philology and Pedagogy are included in this as well.
- Linguistics and Intercultural Communication. This program allows you to choose between Russian and Area studies, and English and Political Sciences.
- Political Sciences.
Students at Yerevan State Linguistic University also have the opportunity to choose a second language. Their choices include English, Polish, Bulgarian, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Arabic.
The Faculty of Translation and Intercultural Communication was established in 2004, but its latest development took place in 2013 in order to provide dual degrees in the offered fields. The fields are:
- Linguistics and Communication. This field includes English and Area Studies, English and Political Science, English and Journalism, English and Tourism, English and Psychology, German and Area Studies, French and Area Studies.
- Translation Studies and Linguistics.
- English-Armenian Translation Studies.
- German-Armenian Translation Studies.
- French-Armenian Translation Studies.
The Faculty of Foreign Languages was founded in 2004 and offers programs in the fields of pedagogy and linguistics. Pedagogy includes English and French, English and German, English and Spanish, English and Italian, English and Persian, English and Greek, English and Korean, French and English, German and English. Linguistics include the same along with English and Indian, Italian and English.
Yerevan State Linguistic University After Brusov (YSLU) also offers a Master’s program for students who wish to continue their studies
The Master’s program was launched in the 2008-2009 academic year. The specialties offered in the Master’s program are:
- Linguistics
- Pedagogy

MA in Linguistics Programs offers Comparative Typology of Languages, Comparative Linguistics, and Semiotics. MA in Pedagogy Programs offers Multilingual Education and Pedagogical Psychology.
MA in Philology Programs offers English, French, German and Russian Philology. MA in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication Programs offers European Studies, International Relations, Political Science, International Tourism, Cultural Anthropology and Semiotics of Culture.
MA in Philology Programs offers English – Armenian, French – Armenian, German – Armenian, Russian – English – Armenian. MA in International Journalism Programs offers International Journalism. MA in Education Management Programs offers Education Management.
Yerevan State Linguistic University After Brusov (YSLU) has one of the best university libraries in Yerevan
YSLU’s library is the student’s favorite spot for working on group projects, revising material or just enjoying their free period with a book. The library was founded in 1935.
At the moment, the Brusov library holds more than 400,000 books. The collection includes books on social science, political science, education, academic articles and works of fiction in Armenian, Russian, English, French, Spanish, German, Persian and other languages taught in the institute.
The book collection is updated on a regular basis. The library building has a reading hall, research hall, repository and a computer room. The reading hall is the most frequented spot in the building. The sight of YSLU’s students reading works of fiction in the reading hall is no strange.
The library also has a collection of unique and rare books (1-20th century) of around 2000. The Brusov library building also has language laboratories equipped with up-to-date technology to make the learning process easier.
Yerevan State Linguistic University established the career and alumni center in 2007, who aims to help students and graduates to find work in the labor market and become involved in international programs.
Yerevan State Linguistic University After Brusov (YSLU) also offers postgraduate programs
Yerevan State Linguistic University established the postgraduate program in 1963. YSLU offers two postgraduate degrees:
- Candidate of Science (Ph.D.)
- Doctor of Science

The Doctor’s Degree Awarding Board is authorized by Higher Qualification Committee of Armenia. They award degrees of Candidates of Science, and Doctor of Science in the fields of Comparative and Typological Linguistics and Philology, Slavonic Languages and Philology, Methodology of Education and Teaching (Foreign Languages and Literature).
Yerevan State Linguistic University After Brusov (YSLU) student life
Ask any student from YSLU, almost all of them are involved in after-school programs. All students are urged to subscribe to the university’s career center to stumble upon different job opportunities, volunteering programs and events.
Since Brusov is located in the center of the city (Tumanyan 42), it is surrounded by dozens of cafes and museums which are frequented by students regularly.
The student-professor life is also very active. Groups of YSLU students and professors regularly attend museum nights and have open-air classes outside the walls of the institution.
The student council of Brusov plays an active role in the student life. It was founded in 1996 and aims to exercise self-governance. Every year at the freshmen’s first semester, a gala is organized to welcome them to YSLU.
The student council organizes excursions to different cities and regions in Armenia, they throw concerts, hold competitions to make student life as exciting as possible. It’s not all fun and games with the student council.
Weekly meetings are held to discuss issues in the academic process and to come up with solutions. The graduation ceremonies are organized by the council.
There are different clubs in the council: book club, Polyglot newspaper, movie club, debate club, etc. Intellectual games, roundtable discussions, conferences, workshops and seminars are frequently held by the council. The student council also gives students the chance to volunteer in social and cultural events in Armenia.
How to enroll at Yerevan State Linguistic University After Brusov (YSLU)
There are 3 entrance exams for students: written and oral exam of a foreign language (English, Russian, French, German and Italian) and Armenian. If scoring high grades, you get a full scholarship. The annual fee for Armenians is 400,000 AMD.
As for international and foreign students, the annual tuition is 550,000 AMD. In order for foreign students to enroll at YSLU, they are required to apply to the Ministry of the Education and Science of Armenia, where further necessary information will be provided by them.
Brusov students have selective cards that allow them to enter the building. This is given to ensure the security of the students, so no outsiders come and bother students.
The security guards keep an eye on unfamiliar faces to avoid mistaking them for students. Losing a selective card is no issue, students can acquire a new one for 3000 AMD.
