As many other airports in the world, Zvartnots international airport also was not built only once and stayed like that later. It has been developed and modernized many times.
An open competition was held in order to find the best architecture for the future airport. A team of engineers won the first prize and this team was made up by structural engineer M. Baghdasaryan, M. Khachikyan, A. Tarkhanyan, S. Qalashyan, L. Cherkezyan.
The airport was designed by H. Tigranyan and a famous Armenian architect A. Meschyan, who is also considered to be a famous artist in Armenia. In the beginning, the airport was aimed for the domestic demands and only after the airport was supporting only the flights throughout the USSR. In 1985 ICAO awarded the Zvartnots airport the second class.
Later, in order to make the airport equal to the other international airports’ standards, the Armenian government renovated the runway of the flights. The name “Zvartnots” itself owes back to a 7th-century old Armenian cathedral “Zvartnots”. The cathedral was built by the Catholicos Nerses the Builder.
The previous building of the airport had some resemblance to one of the cathedrals which now is in ruins. Besides these 2 buildings are situated not far from each other.
Reconstruction of the Airport
Despite the renovations of the airport, a need occurred to build a need building for the airport. This new building opened in 2011. It is highly equipped. Besides, the new building has a strong earthquake stability. The new airport design is very beautiful.
You just need you look at it once and you will never forget the impressing facade of this building. The face of the building is made up from the colorful glasses featuring the colors of the flag of Armenia. This new building can annually handle up to 3.5 million people, nearly twice more than before with the previous one.
A new underground parking was built holding up to 800 cars. Here a check-in new system was integrated into the flight program. The safety of the passengers became one of the leading ideas of the airport and a new passenger terminal was opened as well.
Nowadays, from 2002 June, according to the agreement signed between the RA and the Argentinean “Corporation America” Company, the Zvartnots airport belongs to the “Armenia” International Airports” CJSC for around 30 years.
The airport belongs to the Argentinian company, up to the Boeings, airbuses and Antonov airplanes as well.
The airport has 3 terminals. The first one was built in 1971 and was closed in 2011.The second terminal has 2 buildings which include Arrivals and Departures. This one has been opened since 2006. There you can find a separate VIP terminal as well.
New Controversy about Yerevan Airport in Media and Society
After the construction of the new airport building a new wave of controversy came across through the population of Armenia. In media, an information was spread about the demolition of the tower of the previous building.
As the Armenian mass media were reporting, in 2013, the concession operator of Zvartnots Airport, asked the Yerevan municipality to permit the demolition the tower of the previous airport building.
The company explained this request saying that this tower is strongly damaged and seismic unusable and the reconstruction of the tower would cost nearly up to 20 million dollars.
This idea met the strong protest of the society as well as the protest of the Armenian architects. The union of architects asked the culture ministry to include the Zvartnots airport tower in the government-protected historical constructions’ list.
Today, all these conversations seem to be calmed down for a while, and the old tower is standing in its place as it used to be and seems like this beautiful tower patiently is waiting for its future to be decided.
It is interesting to know that the tower of Zvartnots airport is considered to be a unique example of Soviet Union modern architecture and also kind of a landmark of Yerevan for Armenians.
